I think it is important for teachers to give students more control over their learning environment. By assigning a variety of methods to complete an assignment, the students are able to assess their competencies and choose the way they wish to present their knowledge. For example, give students a clear idea of the parameters of the learning experience. Read Pride and Prejudice. Then explore the theme that you believe is most important by creating: a book of poetry, a movie trailer, a documentary film about the theme, write a new ending to the story that better resolves the thematic issue, rewrite a scene in the book as a skit, paint a picture. etc. The student now has to solve the problem of how to present the material using a method that forces them to think critically and creatively in an independent framework.
In a situation in which we are teaching virtually, a more creative approach might stir the students desire to participate and enhance learning.
