This is a very helpful way to think about our situation and consider a way forward. I would love to hear about ideas for recall activities and imaginative practice tasks in which over time (new) material can be digested!
There is no reason why the stages of learning cannot be incorporated into the virtual learning process. The main problems are the lack of technology, in many cases due to economic inequities, and/or the lack of training in using the available technology. The internet provides numerous sources for conducting an online learning community or classroom. However, not all students are equipped with computers, tablets, and/or Smart Phones. There are also students who have limited internet/Wifi capabilities. This poses a problem for educators.
The second problem is that many classroom teachers are not fully trained to use the internet resources that are available for creative online classroom teaching. Listing assignments on Canvas, or Google Classroom, or whatever platform is being used is not the direction in which we need to move. Live classrooms in Zoom or Google Meet provide participants with the visual contact and socialization that is needed in a viable classroom. Providing students with assignments that are clearly explained, creative, and require critical thinking will increase student involvement in the process. The ability for students to ask questions and listen to other students’ questions opens up a socially active environment.
If we want to be prepared for problems like the coronavirus, we have to look at education from a more enlightened vision. We need to deal with the problem of economic inequities and train teachers to facilitate technology in or out of the classroom.
