I am very interested to be updated with the news in general. Because of my activity as spanish teacher I put more interest in news regarding Spain and Latin America to use them in my upper classes. This is for me a way to arouse the interes of the students in the spanish speaking countries and of course to have a topic to discus about.
As nowadays the printed version of a newspaper is very expensive and not so easy to get as the digital one. I prefer to work with digital news. On the other hand digital newspapers are updating their information continuosly. You can get this information mostly for free. Besides that you have also the posibility of copy the text an work on it with your wordprocessor programm , adapting it for the students to make them easier to read, underlining things you want to remarkt, numbering the lines, etc.
The idea of using different newspapers and compare them from many different perspectives sounds great. Doing that, I personally would prefer to use the printed versions of the newspapers.
Since I was introduced to newspapers similarly by my English teacher (even though it was not in such great detail) and I still remember this topic so vividly, I think it‘s a great way to not only get into the topic of news but also touches social, economical and political questions that are worth talking about.
I have been reading a specific Austrian newspaper for years (I am Austrian), since I have moved to Germany I switched to reading it online. It often also covers German politics, but still I also try to stay on top of German “öffentlich-rechtliche” news. I think it’s also very important to talk about the politics behind the news(papers) themselves and raise awareness about their impact.
I rarely read newspapers because frankly I don’t care about most news topics and those I do care about come to my attention in other ways, e.g. Reddit, YouTube or the Tagesschau. I like to flip through the local newspaper whenever I visit my parents, though.
I read newspapers everyday.
I try to take 20 minutes every morning to read the local news (digital). Before going to bed, I generally try to read some articles in the Süddeutsche as well as Le Monde for example. I also receive newsletters from The Guardian and the New York Times.
Once a month, I buy the printed version of the Süddeutsche and I try to read it through. On a daily basis, I tend to read only the articles that I care about and even though it’s understandable, I try to actively “expose” myself to what else is going on in the world.
As to why I choose this newspaper over another one, I couldn’t really say. I’m a loyal reader and once I’ve found a newspaper I can “identify” with, I’ll mainly keep on reading this one. As for the digital format, the layout plays a big part, much more than for the printed version.
