I don’t have experiences with making videos in foreign language lessons. At our school the use of cellphones is not allowed yet. I’m just experienced in making short films on my own for exhibitions.

Since I am not teaching yet I don´t have any experience with videos in foreign language lessons. Looking back to my time in school I can´t remember any video projects in my english or french lessons.

I remember a film project from my own time in school. It was difficult to get the right equipment back then and I remember us being quite disappointet because we thought we could produce “movie quality” but it truly wasn`t like that at all. Teaching about the language of film seems to be very important at this point, which will also help to appreciate serious film making as producing art.
Referring to Annika in regards of her disappointment during her own school days: I can feel you, but I assume that most kids these days don´t have this expectations in regards to quality. They are used to all kind of youtube videos, where the technical quality of the content often is… questionable – at least if you want to compare it to a real movie. 😉
A lot of content providers even do this by intent, so the situation nowadays might be different.
During my architectural studies we did a project on “time” and used video sequences of a train ride from Karlsruhe to Basel, of stones rolling down a mountain … .
Since this was in the middle of the 1990s we had rather basic material, an old Mac and an old video camera with tapes.
Techniques has developed since then and I am looking forward to trying digital storytelling in school.
I haven’t done a film project with any of my classes yet. But I have seen some very interesting projects e.g. a class in another school once prepared a frame-by-frame kind of video using gummy bears which was aboout prejudice and racism. Maybe something similar might be possible for class 9 when the students learn about the Civil Rights Movement in America. I shall keep this in mind.
I did my apprenticeship as an animal trainer for animals participating in movies so I have learned alot about film in general. Also my cousin is a director/filmmaker, as is my childhood friend who lives in HH. After having learned so much about movie making I now watch movies with “new eyes”. That’s good and bad at the same time..
