To get the discussion started, there’s the very simple example of textual analysis which occurs when working on a novel in the upper school (senior). This might start with the observation of the language and linguistic or literary devices, the framing narrative techniques, plot development or character construction. Then continue, perhaps, with the analysis of the way a reader is positioned by particular devices and techniques… And, finally the judgement as to textual purpose and authorial intent. The process needs to be framed by class discussion and broken down into phases which include close reading and would be enriched by discussion in small groups.
We worked on this task in our community circle meeting (all non-teachers). We all prepared the topic beforehand. Mira (as this weeks leader) shared an important decision she made in her life that was based on a judgement she formed. She spoke about this process in detail and later we talked about it together and shared our own experiences with judgement. Furthermore we discussed how we could support and enable our pupils to come to their own conclusions and why this is so important. Finally we exchanged ideas about the difficulties of being a teacher with your own judgements and opinion already formed but avoiding to enforce those on your pupils. (Group: Lotta, Mira, Björn, Annika)
As I have commented in some other place, I can only speak from my own experience by working with ads in the upper classes. In this regard I work in my spanish classes with printed ads as well as with advertising on the screen. The great thing hereby is the fact, that pupils had to decode the messages by means of semiology. It has been always a great experience to listen to the results with which the students always come up.
You can find innumerable examples of advertising in the web. However, for those who teach spanish as FL in the upper classes, I would like to recomend an advertising campaign related with the mexican society. This is today a relevant material as Mexico is actually a topic in the abitur-examination.
The advertising relates just by means of images the problems of Mexico today. It has been always a great experience let the students watch carefully the scenes of the film and let them name each of the problems by themselves. The results have been always amazing!
Watch the advertising yourself and make your own experience. Try to recognize and name the problems of Mexico, which are shown in this film. Down here you will find the link. Have fun!
