1. Advertisement for Meister Proper, Spee, Merci and later for ringtones (as shown on Viva, MTV) are some that I remember on TV. I also liked those, that were quite emotional, but I do not really remember the products. In magazines I loved those with giveaways attached.
2. I do not have any favourite ads anymore, they annoy me. It took me quite a long time to really understand how advertisement manipulates me and I try to avoid it now, eventhough that is not really possible. Since I reduced my consumption in general I do not want to be reminded of something I might need. I also think that advertising towards children should be forbidden. I do think advertisment is not problematic when it only promotes the name or services of a company but does not try to influence the mindset of the recipient.
3. I think that pupils should be aware, that advertisement is designed to create cravings inside you, that you never had before and to convince you to buy and need the advertised product. It is highly manipulative as this is it’s only sense. Ads so not represent reality and it is not the goal to look and behave like actors in advertisements. Just because a product is well advertised does not mean, that it is of a high quality or better than others. I would probably also inform about greenwashing, since this became a big topic in the recent years. Tracking is another topic that should be mentioned because it heavily effects the way we see ads on the internet.
It seems that I have a quite negative attitude towards advertisement. I feel that it is kind of necessary but especially on TV way to manipulative. Before I start teaching about it I should probably recall some positive facts about it – it can be quite artistic… 🙂
Besides that I found it quite interesting to watch ads in the US and how they differ from ours – also the frequency. It might be an idea to compare for example british and american advertisement on TV. Youtube has a variety of examples – and also it’s own advertisement.
I think the risks of advertising is something that should definitely be talked about, as people and also children are so used to it that they don´t even recognize or care anymore.
Till now I haven’t foccused on analysing the setting up of a film in my spanish lessons. By implementing a film in the upper classes I have been merelly working with the students on the story, the plot, background information, the dialogs, and/or the language register. This new approach of a film analysis increases the possibilities in which FL-Teachers can enrich their lessons. Thank you for sharing this ideas.
In this sense I would like to share with all of you, what in fact I do have been putting into practice in my spanish lessons, which somehow, could be compared with the activities we were talking about above.
I have always seen the students having a lot of fun by analysing -decoding- advertisements and specially the so called „controvertial ads“. In this regard the internet offers a wide variaty of examples. I recomend those of the WWF to work with. They are not only masterpieces of creativity but also have a clever and strong message regarding our environmental problems today. After having organised the class in small groups, the four tasks the students have to curry out are the following:
Describe what you see in the picture
Establish a connection between this image and reality
In your opinion, which message does the artist try to convey?
Make a presentation of your results and share your comments with your classmates
The activity is specially fun because as the artists use creativity and subliminal ways to convey their message, the students are challenged to use their senses, their cognitive capabilities and their generall knowledge to decode the image and put in words the subtle message of the artists which is hidden in it. There are many topics you can work on and make the students become conscious of, while teaching your foreign language. Just put in the search machine the words „controversial ad“, together with the topic you want to work on: drugs/traffic/environment/climate change/bulimia/mobbing/etc.. you name it…have fun!
One Advertisment that I quite like nowadays is the one from Haribo where Adults talk with voices of children. I think its the element of surprise and the humor in this Ad that catches me.
But I do think that the risk of Advertisment has to be brought up in class. And the different aspects of how an ad seems appealing to you.
When I was a young kid, I was usually excitedly waiting for the Allianz-Versicherung advertisement in TV, which was quite funny! Also slogans like “Mein Bac – Dein Bac” or songs like “Schönes Haar ist Dir gegeben, lass es leben ….” remain unforgotten.
Today, I am quite annoyed by ads, especially in TV, as it gets more and more.
It might be a great project for the pupils to examine and analyse different kinds of spots and ads and compare them according to their channel (online, offline, printed, TV….).
I remember lots of TV commercials from when I was a kid. Me and my sister used to play “Werbungraten” and could name the advertised brands in seconds.
Almost everyone I know who was born around the same time knows the jingles from Mini Wini Würstchenkette or Bratmaxe. And the Schöfferhofer which sparkled so nicely in my Bauchnabel will be forever etched into our brains.
Today I rarely see ads, because I don’t watch “regular” TV often. Online ads get blocked or skipped. They have the opposite effect of what they try to achieve: they are annoying and I’m going to actively avoid buying the product.
Young people should know that brand don’t advertise because their products are so amazing and they want to share that amazingness with the world but to make more money. In 9 out of 10 products the best brands don’t even need advertisement, because people know of their quality and buy accordingly.
They should also know that (at least on pc) most ads can and should be blocked.
1. It‘s fun, thinking back of old commercials, that stuck to my mind. Although a lot of them are there merely subconsciously, I suppose. A couple of years back my boyfriend and I were at my mother‘s place in Austria and we stumbled upon a „Teekanne“ commercial. He thought it was hilarious – apparently they use a different slogan in Germany – but for me it was quiet normal 🙂
2. I don’t think I have a favorite commercial, so to speak. I do, however, remember a commercial for jam that used a song I really liked, so this one is still very present in my mind.
3. I think it’s important that young people become aware of the fact, that commercials and ads always want to sell something.
1.I must admit that I can hardly remember any. I can think of MTV emitting its TV-spot showing the MTV logo changing its form from one into another. I was a teenager back then. I recollect the voice saying the name of the channel. This is an example of a visual and auditory element of TVspots that stayed in my memory. I keep asking myself how exact my memories are…
2.I tend to remember adverts that are funny and entertaining but I don’t have any favourite ones.
3. I believe the most significant thing that young people should become aware of is fact that the world of advertisements lures the viewers into consuming and purchasing the products although there is no real need or necessity for the people to buy the products. This happens by means of very sophisticated ways, which of, we are usually not very aware of, in the first moment. The advertisements often make false promises and aim at present goods as far more outstanding and appealing as they truly are.
